Drive Cycle Particulate and Gaseous Emissions from a Parallel Hybrid Combustion Engine and Electric Powertrain

The emissions from a parallel hybrid combustion engine and electric powertrain operated on a modified New European Drive Cycle (NEDC) was investigated in order to determine the relation between emissions and the road and engine load profile. The effect of simulated electric motor assistance during accelerations on emissions was investigated as a means to reduce particulate and gaseous emissions. The time resolved particulate number and size distribution was measured in addition to gaseous emissions. The combustion engine was a downsized, three cylinder spark ignited direct injection (SIDI) turbocharged engine fuelled with gasoline. Electric motor assistance during accelerations was simulated by reduction of the vehicle mass. This reduced engine load during accelerations. Fuel rich engine transients occurred during accelerations. NOx emissions were reduced with electric assistance due to a reduction in engine load.

Soot Source Term Tabulation Strategy for Diesel Engine Simulations with SRM

In this work a soot source term tabulation strategy for soot predictions under Diesel engine conditions within the zero-dimensional Direct Injection Stochastic Reactor Model (DI-SRM) framework is presented. The DI-SRM accounts for detailed chemistry, in-homogeneities in the combustion chamber and turbulence-chemistry interactions. The existing implementation [1] was extended with a framework facilitating the use of tabulated soot source terms. The implementation allows now for using soot source terms provided by an online chemistry calculation, and for the use of a pre-calculated flamelet soot source term library. Diesel engine calculations were performed using the same detailed kinetic soot model in both configurations. The chemical mechanism for n-heptane used in this work is taken from Zeuch et al. [2] and consists of 121 species and 973 reactions including PAH and thermal NO chemistry. The engine case presented in [1] is used also for this work.

Soot Sources in Warm-Up Conditions in a GDI Engine

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines usually emit higher levels of particulates in warm-up conditions of a driving cycle. Thus, sources of soot formation in these conditions were investigated by measuring particulate numbers (PN) emitted from a single-cylinder GDI engine and their sizes. The combustion was also visualized using an endoscope connected to a high-speed camera. Engine coolant and oil temperatures were varied between 15 and 90oC to mimic warm-up conditions. In addition, effects of delaying the start of ignition (SOI) on the emissions in these conditions were examined. Coolant and oil temperatures were varied individually to identify which factor has most effect on PN emissions. While coolant temperature strongly influenced PN with cold oil, the oil temperature insignificantly affected PN at low coolant temperature. These findings indicate that PN emissions are heavily dependent on the engine block’s temperature, which is dominated by the coolant.

Apparent Soot Size and Concentration in Combusting Diesel Jets at High Gas Pressures and Temperatures Measured by Combining Quasi-Simultaneous LII, Elastic Light Scattering and Light Extinction

A method for measuring apparent soot particle size and concentration in turbulent combusting diesel jets with elevated and inhomogeneous optical density is presented and discussed. The method is based on the combination of quasi-simultaneous Laser Induced Incandescence (LII), Elastic Scattering (ELS) and Light Extinction (LE) measurements exhibiting a high potential for spatially resolved measurements of carbonaceous particles in flames and residual gases at a given instant. The method evaluates the LII signal by calculating the laser fluence across the flame and compensating for signal trapping, allowing measurements where laser extinction between the flame borders reaches values up to 90%. The method was implemented by measuring particle size and concentration in the middle sagittal axis of optically dense, combusting diesel jets at a certain time after the start of combustion.

Dual Fuel Methanol and Diesel Direct Injection HD Single Cylinder Engine Tests

Laws concerning emissions from heavy duty (HD) internal combustion engines are becoming increasingly stringent. New engine technologies are needed to satisfy these new requirements and to reduce fossil fuel dependency. One way to achieve both objectives can be to partially replace fossil fuels with alternatives that are sustainable with respect to emissions of greenhouse gases, particulates and nitrogen oxides (NOx). A suitable candidate is methanol. The aim of the study presented here was to investigate the possible advantages of combusting methanol in a heavy duty Diesel engine. Those are, among others, lower particulate emissions and thereby bypassing the NOx-soot trade-off. Because of methanol’s poor auto-ignition properties, Diesel was used as an igniting sources and both fuels were separately direct injected. Therefore, two separate standard common rail Diesel injection systems were used together with a newly designed cylinder head and adapted injection nozzles.

Comparative Assessment of Zero CO2 Powertrain for Light Commercial Vehicles

The transport sector is experiencing a shift to zero-carbon powertrains driven by aggressive international policies aiming to fight climate change. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will play the main role in passenger car applications, while diversified solutions are under investigation for the heavy-duty sector. Within this framework, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) impact is not negligible and accountable for about 2.5% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Europe. In this regard, few LCV comparative assessments on green powertrains are available in the scientific literature and justified by the fact that several factors and limitations should be considered and addressed to define optimal powertrain solutions for specific use cases. The proposed research study deals with a comparative numerical assessment of different zero-carbon powertrain solutions for LCV. BEVs are compared to hydrogen-based fuel cells (FC) and internal combustion engines (ICE) powered vehicles.

Self-Ignition and Early Combustion Process of n-Heptane Sprays Under Diluted Air Conditions: Numerical Studies Based on Detailed Chemistry

This paper reports the numerical studies of self-ignition and early combustion process of n-heptane sprays under various diluted air conditions. The numerical simulations employ a detailed chemistry approach, coupled directly with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A “subgrid” Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) model has been developed to account for the turbulence-chemistry-interaction. This model has been implemented into the KIVA3V CFD code. A detailed chemical mechanism of reduced size (65 species and 273 elementary reactions) for the n-heptane fuel has been derived and applied to the simulations of spray combustion. The studies focus on sprays injected into a high-pressure constant-volume chamber. Firstly, the validation of the current numerical model has been carried out for the case in which the injection and initial conditions are similar to those used in the “classical” Aachen experiments (50bar and 800K).

The Effect of Knock on the Heat Transfer in an SI Engine: Thermal Boundary Layer Investigation using CARS Temperature Measurements and Heat Flux Measurements

It is generally accepted that knocking combustion influences the heat transfer in SI engines. However, the effects of heat transfer on the onset of knock is still not clear due to lack of experimental data of the thermal boundary layer close to the combustion chamber wall. This paper presents measurements of the temperature in the thermal boundary layer under knocking and non-knocking conditions. The temperature was measured using dual-broadband rotational Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS). Simultaneous time-resolved measurements of the cylinder pressure, at three different locations, and the heat flux to the wall were carried out. Optical access to the region near the combustion chamber wall was achieved by using a horseshoe-shaped combustion chamber with windows installed in the rectangular part of the chamber. This arrangement made CARS temperature measurements close to the wall possible and results are presented in the range 0.1-5 mm from the wall.

Drivers’ Perceived Sensitivity to Crosswinds and to Low-Frequency Aerodynamic Lift Fluctuations

The automotive industry continues to increase the utilization of computer-aided engineering. This put demands on finding reliable objective measures that correlate to subjective driver assessments on driving stability performance. However, the drivers’ subjective perception of driving stability can be difficult to quantify objectively, especially on test tracks where the wind conditions cannot be controlled. The advancement in driving simulator technology may enable evaluation of driving stability with high repeatability. The purpose of this study is to correlate the subjective assessment of driving stability to reliable objective measures and to evaluate the usefulness of a driving simulator for the subjective assessment. Two different driver clinic studies were performed in a state-of-the-art driving simulator. The first study included 38 drivers (professional, experienced and common drivers) and focused on crosswind gust sensitivity.

Characterization of Gaseous and Particle Emissions of a Direct Injection Hydrogen Engine at Various Operating Conditions

This paper investigates the gaseous and particulate emissions of a hydrogen powered direct injection spark ignition engine. Experiments were performed over different engine speeds and loads and with varying air- fuel ratio, start of injection and intake manifold pressure. An IAG FTIR system was used to detect and measure a variety of gaseous emissions, which include standard emissions such as NOX and unburned hydrocarbons as well as some non-standard emissions such as formaldehyde, formic acid, and ammonia. The particle number concentration and size distribution were measured using a DMS 500 fast particle analyzer from Cambustion. Particle composition was investigated using ICP analysis as well as a Sunset OC/EC analyzer to determine the soot content and the presence of any unburned engine oil. The results show that NOX emissions range between 0.1 g/kWh for a λ of 2.5 and 10 g/kWh λ of 1.5.

Effect of Cooling Airflow Intake Positioning on the Aerodynamics of a Simplified Battery Electric Road Vehicle

The transition towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has increased the focus of vehicle manufacturers on energy efficiency. Ensuring adequate airflow through the heat exchanger is necessary to climatize the vehicle, at the cost of an increase in the aerodynamic drag. With lower cooling airflow requirements in BEVs during driving, the front air intakes could be made smaller and thus be placed with greater freedom. This paper explores the effects on exterior aerodynamics caused by securing a constant cooling airflow through intakes at various positions across the front of the vehicle. High-fidelity simulations were performed on a variation of the open-source AeroSUV model that is more representative of a BEV configuration. To focus on the exterior aerodynamic changes, and under the assumption that the cooling requirements would remain the same for a given driving condition, a constant mass flow boundary condition was defined at the cooling airflow inlets and outlets.
